Discover Munich's old town!

It's easy to get to the old town from the Munich train station. nbsp;Leave the station and head east. After a short mile walk, you're there! You'll know when you've reached the old city center because the streets change from paved asphalt to rugged cobblestone.br /nbsp;nbsp; You might begin to feel as though you've entered another time period when you walk into the old town. Just imagine that you're back in the Middle Ages when kings and queens ruled, horse drawn carriages swarmed the streets, and vendors sold dried legs of pork and squawking chickens!br /One of the most famous sights in Munich's old town is the Rathaus-Glockenspiel. Check out my snap shot! nbsp;br /nbsp;nbsp; The Glockenspiel is located in the Marienplatz, which is Munich's central square. This is a large clock that chimes everyday at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m. When the clock chimes, figurines of royal dukes and knights rotate around on platforms located in the Glockenspiel's tower. Lederhosen and dirndls abound in this little Bavarian town, and you can be sure to find freshly baked apple streusel and steaming mugs of kinderpunsch during the winter months. The "altstadt" or old town is full of unique shops, quaint cafes, and restaurants serving up traditional Bavarian cuisine.br /nbsp;nbsp; There is a lot of important history in this tiny town. Berchtesgaden was one of the last German cities captured during the final months of World War II and is a must see for all of you war buffs. A close inspection of the railway station will reveal faint traces of the Third Reich, as the government emblem remains, carved into the stone facade of the station.br /nbsp;nbsp; Berchtesgaden is the perfect jumping off point for day trips to Lake Konigsee, a glacier lake that is the cleanest and deepest in Germany, or the Kehlsteinhaus, Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat.br /nbsp;nbsp; You can find more information on Berchtesgaden and World War II, as well as Lake Konigsee and the Kehlsteinhaus in the Germany country book of my Mike's Adventure Packs Europe series.
